Our next stop is one of Glasgow's best student haunts : Hillhead Bookclub.



Now most of us by third year have been to the Bookclub for a few drinks, a boogie, a date or a game of ping pong. Its kooky and unique décor and music makes it a great place to be any time of the week (preferably sun-wed for those 3 quid strawberry mojitos). However, it's a lesser-frequented place for food (excluding brunch) so we thought we'd give their new (?) student deal a go.




We went a Monday lunchtime, it was fairly quiet which was slightly eerie considering how big of a venue the Bookclub is. Not that that's relevant in any way just a passing thought lol.

However you need to come ~well prepared~ - The student deal isn't really advertised anywhere in the place, you've just got to be bold and not sound pathetic when the waitress asks for your drinks order and you go - "Actually we're here for the student deal if that’s ok"

The student deal consists of: Mac n Cheese and A strawberry gin or vodka mojito for £5.





Our cheapest deal yet! How excITING. (I know the bloc+ steak was a fiver too but you drinks weren't included so technically this statement is correct).

So got our macs and mojitos ordered (with a side of chips because Ross and I can't seem to just stick to the student deals), and it all came relatively fast.

Mojitos were pretty great- really love that you get a cocktail in a student deal, kinda makes the fact that you're getting mac n cheese a little classier.




It goes downhill from here. We got our mac only to realise that it's actually a side portion. A SIDE PORTION. I felt a little cheated.




I may have forgiven the pathetic portion size if the mac was mind-blowing, but honestly was very average. Boxed mac n cheese kinda average.

The chips honestly saved my grumpy soul, I'm not sure if the awfulness of the situation made them taste 10 x better or if they're actually that good but they were amazing.



So yeah really mojito did us good but that mac did us so so dirty.

Verdict: 

Taste: 5/10 (saved by the mojito tbh)
Choice: 2/10 (vodka or gin is your choice)
Ambience: 8/10 (bookclub is FUNKY)
Service: 8/10 (the bartenders and waiters are so much cooler than I will ever be)
Value for money: 5/10
Alcohol Factor: PASS 

OVERALL: 5.6

Hola and welcome back amigos. Onto our next student deal- Topolabamba! Now this is a pretty well-known lil Mexican spot that never goes amiss in Glasgow. I’ve heard a lot about the student deal but had yet to try it out. We went a Sunday afternoon and it was fairly busy, however it’s a pretty big place so really didn’t feel cramped at all. Also a hot spot for all you aesthetic lovers out there- there are some dang nice lights. First impression- INSTANT brownie points to the constant Shakira playlist. Loved me some 2009 She Wolf vibes.  We sat down and were given a menu but had to ask for the student deal menu (bit of a shameful moment as the waiter realised we were poor). Welcome back guys! Onto to our next target… Bloc! Bloc, Bar Bloc, Bloc +, whatever you want to call it- this Bath St. venue acts as a restaurant, bar and a music venue which is pretty cool. Would recommend Bloc for a boogie if you've not been yet, but I'd never been for food. What makes Bloc appealing for food is its daily deals~ £3 Pasta Mondays, £3 Burger Tuesdays, £5 Steak Wednesdays, £4 Kentucky Thursdays and £4 Bloc+ Dog Friday. (Now before someone has a go at me I'm WELL AWARE these aren't TECHNICALLY student deals but they're very cheap so really you should thank me x ) SO. We went a Wednesday for that good 5 dolla steak. I figured there was no way they'd give you a decent piece of meat for that price so thought it was worth checking out. We got there around half one and it was PACKED. Bar Soba

Hello it's me I am still kickin. Deal number 5- Bar Soba Merchant City! Now this one was interesting because Bar Soba previously had a very-well known student deal for the past few years: 2 for 1 mains. However while doing some research for this blog I found out that they had gotten rid of this deal (SHOCK HORROR) and replaced it with another one completely. Now, the annoying part about this deal is that you've gotta work for it. Like really want it. By this I mean you have to apply for it online and go collect your student card at your local Bar Soba. Which I know is a chore for first-world uni students. But honestly a deal that's pretty worth it. The student deal consists of: 50% of all food on the main menu and 25% off of drinks. (T&Cs- valid all day Sunday to Thursday ad 12pm to 5pm on Fridays)  I know it's a bit different than the other deals I've done but I thought 50% off a wHoLe MeNu was definitely worth a go!
