Shilling Brewing Company
Let me start off by saying that I approached this particular student deal with a touch of resentment. I've come to SBC for their student deal a few months ago, back when it was £4 for a pizza and pint and redeemable upon the simple presentation of a valid student ID. Now however, the deal is £6 and a special student deal app 'UniLife' must be presented. But I'm more mad about the extra £2 tbh.
We sat ourselves
down as it's a more relaxed, order-at-the-bar vibe, and realised that the student deal is
actually not advertised at all within SBC; it's only apparent online, so you'd
need to do your research beforehand in order to save some £££.
The student deal consists of: A pint of your choice
between 3 house beers (Unicorn IPA, Glasgow Red Ale, and Black Star Teleporter)
and a standard Margherita Pizza for £6.
We went ahead and
ordered some Unicorn IPAs, two pizzas and added a Truffle Aioli Pizza Crust
Dipper for £1 each because we're wild like that.
Regarding choice,
this deal is saved by the choice of beer you have (even though I think it could
benefit from having a lager to pick from). The pizza choice is a bit
disappointing in the way that SBC has some great pizzas to pick from on their
menu; being restricted to the Margherita was a little bit heart-breaking.
The
biggest disappointment of the evening however, was the 10 minute wait between
both of us at the table getting our pizzas. By the time my boyfriend got his
pizza I had already inhaled mine for fear of it getting cold. Watching the
other stuff their face with pizza was not exactly the cute date we had hoped
for.
But on to the main
event: let's attempt to do some food/beer review. The Unicorn IPA was pretty
great (but also considering they're a brewing company I would kinda hope they'd
be good at beer). The Margherita pizza was pretty standard; it was a good easy-going
pizza, but honestly had nothing on Paesano. But let's talk about what saved the
evening. The absolute STAR of the show: The truffle aioli, ladies and
gentlemen.
This was the SINGLE
MOST delicious thing my mouth had ever tasted. A perfect, creamy, garlicky
beauty to dip your crusts in. Honestly I think I shed a tear for it. Definitely
10/10 recommendation; it is the best part of the whole SBC experience and I cannot
stress enough how worth the extra £1 it
is.
But let's wrap this
up and give Shilling Brewing Company some ratings:
Taste: 7/10 (Saved by the truffle aioli)
Choice: 6/10 (If you're in it for the beer,
decent choice; if you're in it for the pizza, not so much)
Ambience: 8/10 (Much approve)
Service: 6/10 (10 minute wait between pizzas
was not hot- servers were really nice though)
Value for Money: 5/10
Alcohol factor: PASS
OVERALL : 6.4/10
